  • Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the US, the risk varies with race. 
  • Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the US 
  • 1 in 3 US adults have at least one of the conditions or habits that are leading causes of stroke: 
    • High Blood pressure 
    • High Cholesterol 
    • Smoking 
    • Obesity 
    • Diabetes

Stroke in Kentucky

  • In 2016 the CDC reported that in the state of Kentucky, stroke ranks as number 14th of leading causes of death.  
  • The University of Kentucky prepared a report in 2017 of stroke incidence in Kentucky from 2015 statistics. The report stated the following statistics of stroke patients: 
    • 60% were older than 65 
    • 51% were women
    • 75% had high blood pressure 
    • 36% had high cholesterol  
    • 34% had diabetes 
    • 23% were smokers
